OOTD: Holiday Party Edition

I had a chance this past weekend to attend my first official Holiday Party of the season (ok, this may be my only holiday party of the season unless some serious invites show up soon!).  Anyway, I attended the Gray’s Annual Holiday Party at the Harvey B. Gantt Center this past Saturday.

This was a “party with a purpose” since the party was actually a fundraiser for the Gantt Center itself.  (For those unfamiliar, the Gantt Center is an African American Arts & Cultural Center located in Uptown Charlotte in the Levine Arts District).  It is an amazing venue.  The “America I Am Exhibit” is currently on display there and a ticket to the party offered a free tour of the exhibit, in addition to complimentary drinks all evening, a cajun style buffet and a jazz band and DJ.

I decided to wear one of my fave J. Crew Cocktail dresses for this event.  I am a huge J. Crew fan but I have a special love for their party and cocktail dresses.  Their collections always have a variety of dresses to choose from for every personality type – from minimalist to whimsical – and the colors are always amazing.  This dress I especially love because of the stunning metallic hue.  It just screams holidays to me!

Anyway, the night was sheer fun — great music, an electric crowd and  good food!  I had the best time out in a long time and other than some really angry feet at the end of the night — all was good!!  How have your holiday parties been so far?  What’s your holiday party style?  IMG_0797

How to Style 2 Classics: Pencil Skirts and Chambray Shirts

DSC_0017First of all, do not forget to enter my amazing giveaway for a custom made Kenya L Designs Blazer. The contest ends on Dec 23 and right now the entries are very limited (translation=your chances of winning are quite good). I’m also relaxing the rules slightly…  if you complete 2 out of the 3 eligibility requirements, you’ll be entered for the drawing. (See Animal Print, Peplum and a Giveaway post for additional details).

Now, with that bit of housekeeping out of the way…

DSC_0081Everyone loves an oldy but goody right?  You know what I mean…  There are just certain classic pieces that seem to remain wardrobe staples season after season.  And while their popularity and position in the fashion world may ebb and flow slightly, somehow they continue to keep looking fresh.  Enter the pencil skirt and the chambray shirt.  Both classic pieces, and both getting loads of attention right now.  I can’t seem to stop thinking about either of them so why not style the 2 together?

You know my love for the pencil skirt (see Latest Obsession: The Printed Pencil Skirt).  It’s a simple yet classy style and the cut is very flattering on practically every body type.  But I am also quickly becoming crazed with the chambray top too.  It is an easy trend to wear and a perfect neutral.  And there are so many styling options; layered underneath a crewneck sweater or sheath, worn open (almost as a cardigan) over a dress or pants, tucked in to a skirt, worn with colored pants or jeans, buttoned and belted over a dress or skirt.  I could go on….  I think the point is that chambray is a easy way to add some contrast to an outfit.DSC_0037

IMG_0031I decided to pair my chambray top (tucked in) with a recent J. Crew pencil skirt purchase.  This skirt is definitely multi- dimensional as is: great texture, beautiful print and an awesome hue.  But with that, I still wanted to add another unexpected piece to it.  I decided to wear this skirt high waisted as well and added a belt just for a little more separation between the 2 pieces.  The blue suede shoes were purely for statement purposes — just to add a little funky edge!

Animal Print, Peplum and a Giveaway!

DSC_0020Sorry for the absence this week everyone…  I feel like I’m always saying this but it was enormously busy and despite my best intentions, I did not get a chance to post.  One big reason was all of the family excitement right now.  My brother and sister in law are expecting their first child and it seems like baby Micah wants to make an earlier than expected arrival!  All is well, but it has definitely made for an interesting week.  That said…  my baby niece may be here very soon and I am extremely excited!!

Anyway, to make up for my being away this week, I thought what better time than now to do my first official giveaway!!!  Here are the eligibility requirements:

  1. Comment on this post (please include contact info so I can get in touch with you should you win)
  2. Tweet or Retweet this post with hashtag#KenyaLDesignsGiveaway
  3. Favorite my Etsy Shop or one of the items in my shop (New Items Just Added and More to Come in the Next Week – 25% off Holiday Sale right now!)DSC_0047

Of course I can’t just end this post without sharing one of my favorite outfits from this past week.  I was inspired by a fellow blogger (and all of my talk of short and long sleeve options last post) to take my peplum top and give it a try in cooler weather.  I actually like how this look turned out.DSC_0015

The Long and Short of It: How to Wear a Short Sleeve Jacket in the Fall/Winter

DSC_0045The weather in Charlotte this weekend has been amazing…  Honestly, I really shouldn’t just say the weekend, it’s been pretty incredible for awhile.  We’ve reached nearly 70 degrees for several days in a row and it feels great.  I guess the downside is that it puts a bit of a damper on the whole holiday “weather outside is frightful” thing but oh well…  I’m sure cooler weather will be coming soon.

DSC_0038Anyway, I’m sure you noticed in my last post that I sported a short sleeve blazer look with a long sleeve tee.  With the great weather this weekend, I thought it would be a perfect time to experiment again with that layering style.  Layering is an essential part of cooler weather fashion.  And I find myself doing it more and more since the weather here has been even more fickle than usual.  Just as the denim vest and classic cardigan have become a perfect transitional and layering piece, a short sleeve or cropped sleeve blazer can serve that purpose as well.  But the truth is, I’m not a big vest person and the cardigan can be so overdone.  So, for me, this gives another unexpected layering option.  In fact, I love the idea of this look not being just for spring and summer.  It can be a staple piece year round!  Just take your blazer or jacket and layer it right over your long sleeve tee or turtleneck (and don’t shy away from mixing prints and colors when you do).DSC_0039

What I’m Wearing: Kenya L Designs Blazer – purchase here, J. Crew Turtleneck, J. Crew Mid-Rise Skinnies, Quipid Riding Boots, Versona Accessories (new Versona Accessories I might add.  Just picked up that awesome necklace last weekend (on clearance no less))!!  Woo-hoo!

What’s your favorite way to layer?  Let me know.  Have a good week everyone!!!!
