A New Way to Layer: Dress Over Pants

DSC_0043Ok, so I have been trying to style this vintage dress for months now!  If you remember my Hong Kong Vintage post a few months back, you know I picked up quite a few unique pieces.  This dress happened to be one of them, and although I was extremely excited about it, I had been holding off on wearing it because I just wasn’t 100% committed on how to style it.

DSC_0061I was drawn to this dress because of the fabulous print more than anything…  so it felt like something that deserved a little bit more than your typical shift dress styling.  Well of course wearing a dress over pants isn’t new….  it was a big trend in the 90’s and was seen a bit on the F/W runways this fall and even on a few celebrities (Check out this Emma Watson look).

DSC_0058And to be honest, I hadn’t totally abandoned the dress over pants look anyway.  I’ve definitely worn it here and there since the 90’s.  I just feel like it’s a great way to change up a typical look and add a little bit of unexpected layering.  (And I decided to add in a little print mixing as well!!)

Camo Skinnies: My First Zara Experience – Part 2

DSC_0015If you read my last post, then you know my very first experience with Zara was the purchase of these fabulous Camo Skinnies!  To say it was love at first sight would be an understatement….  I honestly have been fighting the urge to wear these pants every day since!  The fit is impeccable and the styling details are right on.  Add the fact that camouflage seems to be the “it” print right now (it’s all over the runways and blogs) and it’s just hard to put these pants down.

DSC_0024I promised to share my 2nd styling of these gorgeous skinnies in my last post, so here it is….  You remember that my first styling featured a more feminine look to balance out the military trend, but this time, I decided to style it with just a bit more edge.  Camouflage is actually a very versatile print and offers a ton of styling options.  Although it was initially intended to help disguise, a camouflage statement piece can be a great way to stand out.  Just be careful not to over do it – consider wearing only one camo piece at a time!DSC_0016

Camo Skinnies: My First Zara Experience – Part 1

DSC_0035That’s right, until a few weeks ago, I was a Zara virgin.  Had never owned any Zara item.   You see, there are no actual Zara stores anywhere close to Charlotte (I think Atlanta is the closest) and I just hadn’t had much exposure to the brand.  Of course, in the blog world, it doesn’t take long to figure out that Zara offers some very funky, on trend, fashion items at (amazingly) very reasonable prices.

DSC_0026So, when I started lusting after a pair of skinny camo’s, Zara seemed like a good brand to check out.  Now, I must admit I was a little skeptical at first.  As a curvy girl, it’s difficult for me to find jeans and pants (skinny in particular) that fit properly.  And being unfamiliar with the brand, I was really nervous about the fit, but I decided to give them a try.

DSC_0056Well, all of that worry was clearly for nothing.  To say I love them would be a severe understatement.  These pants are fabulous!!  I love the worn in look, the zipper embellishments and added seams for detail.  And they fit like a glove!  They feel like that favorite pair of jeans that you’ve worn for years.  (So of course I immediately purchased 2 more pair of Zara jeans online!  Yes, Zara, this will probably be the beginning of a long and torrid love affair!).DSC_0071

Anyway, I wore this look all day on Saturday.  I decided to change it up a little while out for dinner with my girlfriends later that night (you’ll see that look in Part 2 of this post later this week).

Is Being Matchy-Matchy Really Faux Pas?

DSC_0050Ok, so this is the deal….  I know the matchy-matchy thing is considered a fashion no-no right now.  It’s all about being unpredictable and unexpected.  Stripes with plaids.  Camo jacket meet tulle skirt.  The more extreme… the better.  Which works, right?  Yes, it works…  until you get to a point where the unexpectedness becomes… well… expected!

DSC_0019Now, I’m not saying that I’m ready to go back to the days of matching head to toe coordinates and leisure suits (I’m not quite sure I was ever there) but I am saying maybe I don’t want to have to be unpredictable all the time.  Maybe I want things to coordinate occasionally.  Maybe… just maybe… I don’t want that pop of pink or yellow or red.  That’s right… I’d like to buck the system some days, you know?  Be a rebel!  And for today, bucking the system is coordinating!

How ironic that what was considered a fashion faux pas has somehow now become going against the norm.  Hilarious…DSC_0100

Nautical Stripes… Not Just For Summer

DSC_0020 Let’s be honest, this trend is one that tends to stay around season after season, right?  Yet, I’m always amazed at how designers seem to find new and creative ways to reintroduce the beloved stripe to us.  This year is no exception of course.  Nautical wear has always been associated with spring and summer ensembles but more and more fashion no-no’s are becoming fashion uh-huh’s… and designers are taking that concept and throwing the nautical stripe right into the mix for winter wear!!   And I, for one, am a HUGE fan!

DSC_0016

So…  when my brother and sis in law were looking for Christmas gift suggestions…  umm…  I gladly added this item to the list!! And goody for me….  they came through with this classic piece that I’m wearing!!!  I decided to temper the more traditional colors of this sweater with a bold hue on the bottom.

Remember, with prints continuing to rule, the stripe falls right in line (no pun intended!)….   You’ll have no problem finding striped tops in lots of color choices and sizes.  And latest spin to this trend: color blocked nautical tops (see picks here at Ann Taylor and Loft).

OOTD: How to Wear the Sweater Coat Trend

DSC_0068 Happy New Year Blog Family!  I apologize for my absence over the past few weeks.  Life has been quite busy… full of lots of new beginnings, celebrations and good times!  First things first….  My baby niece (Micah Grace) arrived on December 21…  nearly 6 weeks early… but beautiful and healthy.  Yay!!!  She is such a blessing!!!  And I already know there will be lots of spoiling going on.  She is beyond adorable.  (I’m sure she’ll be making many guest appearances in the blog!) So between her arrival, my standard last minute Christmas shopping, prepping for hosting Christmas this year, a one day trip to the parents house on Christmas Eve, a trip back to Charlotte on Christmas Day with everyone in tow and a full week of family in town…  umm…  I’m bushed!  But I wouldn’t trade it for anything!  It was such a great time.  There is nothing like a new baby and her arrival made the holiday and the family time even more special.  It was exactly what the holiday should be all about….

DSC_0019Anyway, if you haven’t noticed…  sweater coats are definitely making a comeback this winter and this time, lots of vibrant prints and deep, rich colors are being added to this classic piece!  Of course my take on any jacket or coat is that it is just another “accessory” for your ensemble.  And the sweater coat is no exception to that.  It’s an easy way to add instant polish to any look and make a statement while doing it!  It’s extremely versatile and a great layering option.  And to me, it’s a little more jazzy that the classic cardigan but can be paired in virtually the same way….  How could you ask for more??

DSC_0031This particular look is more of a thin sweater coat…  And I loved it for that very reason.  It literally  “floated” as I walked.  There is something about that effortless floaty look that just makes you feel so chic!!!  Love it.  Even if this look is not for you, there are so many variations of it, it’s easy to make your own (consider a chunky knit version or a ski sweater coat for instance).
