Winter Florals

DSC_0016Florals have been on my winter obsession list pretty much all winter long.   In fact, I actually purchased this skirt before the end of last year.  But, I had been really challenged in finding the right thing to style it with… so challenged that I had almost given up on making it a winter time look…. until last night.

DSC_0013I decided to “reassess” my closet and came across these pieces.  I must admit this look definitely pushed my fashion comfort level (yes, even more than the dress over pants post).  And I had more than my share of love/hate moments throughout the day today.  Standing in the mirror this morning, I was ready to declare myself a fashion genius but after a few hours at work and a quick visit to the bathroom (and the mirror)… I started thinking more along the lines of #fashion fail!  DSC_0027The thing is…  floral prints already have so much color and pop — so it could be very easy to go too far.  I certainly didn’t want to be in that category but I also didn’t want to do the typical either.

At the end of the day, I like how the look turned out.  I decided to stay in the same general color scheme by pairing it with the printed chambray shirt, navy tights and blue suede heels and I think adding the navy blazer helped blend the pieces together.DSC_0018DSC_0036

What do you think?  How have you pushed your fashion comfort level lately?  Any love/hate moments to share?  Let me know!

OOTD: Monochrome – Silver and White

DSC_0013Hi Fashion Lovers!!!  For today, I thought I’d share a quick OOTD post.  I picked up this dress a few weeks back at Nordstrom Rack.  I immediately loved the simplicity of it.  It’s such a classic style but I particularly loved the silver and white stripes – it’s a refreshing twist on the typical black and white stripe combo.  I had a presentation at work today so it felt like a good polished look for the presentation and a great “feel good” outfit for the first official day back to work after a holiday (does anybody else do that?)

DSC_0038Now, I know monochrome in usually thought of in terms of black and white, but in actuality…  I see it as more of a consistent theme of colors in an ensemble.  Hence the silver and white.  Monochrome is definitely getting a lot of attention right now.  It’s all over the runways of course and is expected to continue to grow as a trend in 2013.  I admit I like this one a lot.  There are unlimited style variations and choices with the monochrome trend, which leaves a lot of latitude to make it suit your own individual style.DSC_0020

For me, I decided to add the gray blazer and gray tights to really round out the theme.  Of course, I had to add the pop of color with the purse (I just could not resist!).  Overall, I think it turned out quite well and I love the fact that I can easily transition this look from cooler weather to spring in a month or so.DSC_0033DSC_0042

Ooo La La: My French Bulldog Animal Sweater

DSC_0028So, with the Ground Hog and I both predicting an early exit to winter (at least locally), I’m trying to get all of my final winter obsessions in before it’s too late. I’ve had  animal intarsia sweaters on my list since last fall but for some reason never quite got around to actually picking one up .

(And for those of you who may not know exactly what intarsia means: it is a knitting method used to knit a pattern using a number of colors together)

DSC_0045Anyway, a recent J. Crew sale reminded me of my obsession again with this trend.  I was hopeful I would be able to pick up a couple as part of the sale.  But of course, they were completely sold out!  Ughh…  but no worries, I was able to find them on eBay!  Woo-hoo!

DSC_0034Now, although the animal motif trend has been extremely huge this season, I personally only like the ones that are more on the fun and whimsical side.  But there are lots to choose from.  And there are lots of styling options for this look too.  Skinny jeans are an obvious choice but also consider pairing with a skinny printed trouser or a printed pencil skirt.   In fact, my next styling goal for this trend will be with a floral pencil skirt that I thrifted recently.

Raid Your Boyfriend’s Closet: The Menswear Blazer

DSC_0045I picked up this blazer while thrifting at Value Village….  in the men’s section!  Yep, that’s right…. the men’s section!  It was an absolute gem of a find and a complete steal…  $3.80 and in perfect condition!  Are you kidding me?  DSC_0031With the completely awesome elbow patches?  Only $3.80?  I mean if you’re a regular reader, you know that I love a good blazer.  And with menswear being all of the rage right now, I’d had my sights on a great menswear “inspired” blazer.  I never really considered that I would literally be borrowing this one “from the boys”.

DSC_0020What I love about this trend is that there are so many options for incorporating menswear into your look right now.  A blazer, of course, is a very simple way to do it but also consider adding a button down shirt, a bow tie, a fedora or even oxfords.  Another cool thing that I like about this trend is you can add as many menswear inspired pieces as you want without it looking like you’ve…  well…  gone too far… always a good thing!DSC_0019
