Lite Brite, Anyone? – Brights in Bold Fall Fashion

As I was uploading and reviewing the photos from today’s post, I couldn’t help but think of the Lite Brite  toy by Hasbro from the 80’s.  Does anybody else remember this toy?  Or am I completely dating myself?  Ok, so granted, I never actually had one — but I do vividly remember the commercials, in particular around the holidays, of little kids creating crazy designs on a dark board with neon bright pegs.  And I always thought it was the coolest thing….  Anyway, today’s photos definitely brought it back to me – bright colors against a dark back drop – hence the inspired title!

Anyway, my outfit inspiration from today actually came from a J. Crew look that I saw online last week. (Latest Obsession:  Printed Pencil SkirtBut the crazy thing is…  even though it was my full intention to recreate the J. Crew look, apparently I was actually re-channeling a previous look of my own!  Remember the Blazer and Skinny Jeans Restyled post?  Yep – it is the ABSOLUTE identical look.  The only thing that’s different?  Skirt instead of Jeans, Long Sleeve Tee instead of Tank and add in the Gray Tights.  CRAZY.  I mean who unintentionally does that?  Hilarious!  Apparently I really like this color combo!

Tip: Consider your short sleeve blazer as a “vest” of sorts.  Pair it over a long sleeve tee or blouse.  It creates a very unexpected yet polished look.

What I’m Wearing: Kenya L. Designs Blazer – purchase here, J. Crew Top, J. Crew Wool Pencil Skirt, Gray Sweater Tights, BCBG Girls Mary Jane’s, Michael Kors Purse and Watch, Versona Accessories

What’s been your latest style inspiration?  I’d love to hear from you!

Charlotte Restaurant Week – Queen’s Feast Fashion Style

Today is the last day in Charlotte’s restaurant week.  Now, for those of you not familiar with the concept, this is truly a food lovers fantasy.  It’s a fairly simple idea; local restaurants participate in a 10 day food fest – offering at least 3 courses for a flat $30.  That’s right…  3 courses – $30!  Clearly, it’s a win-win for everyone.  It runs 2 times per year, generally during slow periods like mid-summer or right after the Christmas holidays.  It’s a sales boost for restaurant owners and an opportunity for us regular folk to eat gourmet style on a frugal budget!!  Didn’t I say win-win?  It’s gotten really popular over time and more and more cities are starting to participate.  I love it!  It’s a great chance to check out the city’s ever changing restaurant landscape.

So, last night we decided to check out Paco’s Tacos and Tequila.

Primarily because they offered 4 courses and a margarita!  Yep, that’s right, add a margarita to the deal and I’m sold!!  But it turned out to be an excellent choice.  The spot itself was hoppin’!  I honestly couldn’t believe I didn’t know about it before.  Great bar vibe and packed!!  The food was excellent – Texas style – flavorful and filling!!!

Now, I decided to grab one of my Nordstrom Rack finds for my night out…. ( you may remember this photo from my post last weekend).  Of course, everybody knows by now that I’m a big color blocking fan.   I think this top is a great example of the unexpected contrast of colors.  I decided to pair it with some basic black shorts and my fav color blocked pumps (of course)!  So, what do you think?  Would you have paired this differently?  Let me know.

What I’m Wearing: Kim and Cami Top, Ann Taylor Shorts, BCBG Color Block Pumps, Vintage Purse, Versona Accessories

And for those of you interested in where other Restaurant Week’s are held:

Have a great week everyone!!!

Flowing Frocks and Romantic Ruffles

I’ve noticed a recurring theme with some of my recent summer dress purchases…. ruffles.  Yep, that’s right, ruffles.  I think they may be my latest obsession.  Now, I’ve never been a big ruffle person.  I have a few tops here and there but nothing consistent in my wardrobe.  That is, not until now.  I mean, ruffles can be tricky.  The last thing you want is a “Puffy Shirt” incident… a la Seinfeld, right?  Ruffles are great but you have to find the right way to work them in.  And I think I have.  I’ve been looking online for a nice summer dress for an upcoming Women’s Brunch event.  Nothing too formal, of course, but not quite as casual as my usual everyday sundresses.  So, I found this one…  and that’s when it hit me, ruffles may be my newest “thing”.

I personally love this dress from Ann Taylor…. It’s been tailored with such intricate detail and it has this great alluring flow to it.  It’s just light and easy.  It’s a great dress and it’s perfect for a summer time event, whether it be a brunch or a beautiful summertime wedding.  I’ve been looking for that perfect dress and I think I may have found just the right one: the Ann Taylor Silk Georgette Dress in Hypnotic Pink.  What do you think?

Now, here are two of my other favorites with ruffles….  I integrated both of these into my work wardrobe but what I really love about them is how easily they can transition from day to night.

What I love about this dress is its piercing blue color and the cascade of the ruffle trim.  Very light and flowy.  It’s another great summer time dress – and it’s perfect as the temperature really begins to heat up.  What I’m Wearing: Ann Taylor Soft Cascades Dress in Poolside, Enzo Angiolini Python Print Sandals, J. Crew Necklace and Versona Accessories.

And of course this yellow and white maxi is a favorite of mine too.  It has a beautiful elongated silhouette and a great left side split.  It’s definitely a grab and go glam item.  What I’m Wearing: Ann Taylor Loft Maxi Dress, BCBG Sandals, B-Low the Belt Braided Hip Belt, Cole Haan Purse, and Versona Accessories.

So, what about you?  Are you in love with ruffles too?

Happy 4th of July everyone!!!

Next Up: Essence Music Festival in New Orleans

Beach Bound…

Well, I am officially on vacation!!  And believe you me, it is much needed.  But no rest just yet —  I’ve been running around like crazy for the last few hours trying to get everything ready.  In fact, I am actually taking a break right now from my last minute packing frenzy (of course…) just to blog.

So a couple of quick updates…. 1st off, I just  purchased my 1st SLR camera – a red Nikon D3100!  I love it!!  I mean – it’s red for goodness sake!!  How cool is that?  So, I’ve mentioned before that taking photos is not an easy task for me, it just doesn’t come naturally — and of course, taking them with an outdated Cybershot or the trusty iPhone just hasn’t seemed to work out too well.  So, I did my research and committed to the D3100.  It seems like an awesome camera so far and I am eager to post future blogs with photos from it.  And perfect timing — I should have plenty of scenery at the beach — so I’ll have plenty of time to practice.

2nd, I am meeting with a local sewing contractor tomorrow morning to kick off my jacket design project!!  I’m  just so excited about it — but I’ll be honest — a little nervous too.  She seems great,  has a great portfolio, and solid experience doing runs for small companies and start-ups.  So, it feels right but we’ll see how it goes after this initial consultation.  I’m going with the navy wide pinstripe fabric and pink plaid pattern combo for the 1st blazer.  Wish me luck!

And of course, I could not close out the week without sharing my latest favorite fashion ensemble.  I’ve always been a fan of the jumpsuit.  It’s such as simple concept – classic yet chic.  So, when I found this one at Ann Taylor Loft — I couldn’t pass it up.  Now, for me, the key to a great jumpsuit is to cinch the waist, so I added one of my favorite belts to it.  And you know, I couldn’t help but feel a little Farrah Fawcett/Charlie’s Angels in this!!  You just feel sexy.  So, there you go….  Loved it.

Happy Weekend everyone — Next blog – From the beach!!!!

More Color Blocking Fun!

Color Block BCBG Stilettos

Ok, so you’ll have to forgive me but I am still on the whole color blocking thing…  I just love it.  It is so much fun!  I honestly can’t remember being so excited about the fashion possibilities for the summer.  It is definitely a good time for those who love clothes!  In fact, it is part of the reason I started this blog.  Now, one cool thing about the colors for the season is that they have invaded shoes too!  Color blocked shoes are everywhere and they are a simple way to add that splash of color to your wardrobe.  Now, I’ll be honest, a color blocked shoe can be a bit intimidating.  When I checked out these shoes in the store, I wasn’t quite sure.  They were hot – definitely – but my mind immediately went to “But what will I wear them with?” If that happens, umm…. just ignore it, ok?  Because that is the point.  Color block shoes are just plain fun!  So, even if you’re not quite ready to venture out into other color block pieces, this is a good way to ease into it.  Suddenly your shoes have become the statement piece for your wardrobe.  And don’t think this is just for weekends and after 5, its a fun way to add some sass to your 9-5 too (that’s what I did)!
