OOTD: How to Wear the Sweater Coat Trend

DSC_0068 Happy New Year Blog Family!  I apologize for my absence over the past few weeks.  Life has been quite busy… full of lots of new beginnings, celebrations and good times!  First things first….  My baby niece (Micah Grace) arrived on December 21…  nearly 6 weeks early… but beautiful and healthy.  Yay!!!  She is such a blessing!!!  And I already know there will be lots of spoiling going on.  She is beyond adorable.  (I’m sure she’ll be making many guest appearances in the blog!) So between her arrival, my standard last minute Christmas shopping, prepping for hosting Christmas this year, a one day trip to the parents house on Christmas Eve, a trip back to Charlotte on Christmas Day with everyone in tow and a full week of family in town…  umm…  I’m bushed!  But I wouldn’t trade it for anything!  It was such a great time.  There is nothing like a new baby and her arrival made the holiday and the family time even more special.  It was exactly what the holiday should be all about….

DSC_0019Anyway, if you haven’t noticed…  sweater coats are definitely making a comeback this winter and this time, lots of vibrant prints and deep, rich colors are being added to this classic piece!  Of course my take on any jacket or coat is that it is just another “accessory” for your ensemble.  And the sweater coat is no exception to that.  It’s an easy way to add instant polish to any look and make a statement while doing it!  It’s extremely versatile and a great layering option.  And to me, it’s a little more jazzy that the classic cardigan but can be paired in virtually the same way….  How could you ask for more??

DSC_0031This particular look is more of a thin sweater coat…  And I loved it for that very reason.  It literally  “floated” as I walked.  There is something about that effortless floaty look that just makes you feel so chic!!!  Love it.  Even if this look is not for you, there are so many variations of it, it’s easy to make your own (consider a chunky knit version or a ski sweater coat for instance).

The Long and Short of It: How to Wear a Short Sleeve Jacket in the Fall/Winter

DSC_0045The weather in Charlotte this weekend has been amazing…  Honestly, I really shouldn’t just say the weekend, it’s been pretty incredible for awhile.  We’ve reached nearly 70 degrees for several days in a row and it feels great.  I guess the downside is that it puts a bit of a damper on the whole holiday “weather outside is frightful” thing but oh well…  I’m sure cooler weather will be coming soon.

DSC_0038Anyway, I’m sure you noticed in my last post that I sported a short sleeve blazer look with a long sleeve tee.  With the great weather this weekend, I thought it would be a perfect time to experiment again with that layering style.  Layering is an essential part of cooler weather fashion.  And I find myself doing it more and more since the weather here has been even more fickle than usual.  Just as the denim vest and classic cardigan have become a perfect transitional and layering piece, a short sleeve or cropped sleeve blazer can serve that purpose as well.  But the truth is, I’m not a big vest person and the cardigan can be so overdone.  So, for me, this gives another unexpected layering option.  In fact, I love the idea of this look not being just for spring and summer.  It can be a staple piece year round!  Just take your blazer or jacket and layer it right over your long sleeve tee or turtleneck (and don’t shy away from mixing prints and colors when you do).DSC_0039

What I’m Wearing: Kenya L Designs Blazer – purchase here, J. Crew Turtleneck, J. Crew Mid-Rise Skinnies, Quipid Riding Boots, Versona Accessories (new Versona Accessories I might add.  Just picked up that awesome necklace last weekend (on clearance no less))!!  Woo-hoo!

What’s your favorite way to layer?  Let me know.  Have a good week everyone!!!!

Holiday Stockings

Well Blog Family, it is the official start of the holidays.  All of the Turkey and shopping definitely affected my blogging intentions this past week.  I certainly had good intentions, I promise, but there was something about being full on dressing and turkey, watching Thanksgiving Day parades, doing some Black Friday shopping, and screaming at my favorite teams during football games that made it tough!

Anyway, it was a great holiday.  I enjoyed the time with my family so much — I really didn’t want them to leave today.  We had lots of food, good times and laughs.  It was just a great week.  And now, I think I am officially in the holiday mood!  I just finished putting up the Christmas tree and hanging the Christmas stockings.  Yay!!  Now, if only I could get started on my holiday shopping list!  We’ll work on that next week.

In the meantime, I thought I would share some other “holiday stockings” of mine….  I think the holiday season is the perfect time to jazz up your everyday attire just a step.  And tights are a great way to do that.  Tights come in a variety of festive prints and patterns.  Think about it… in many ways, tights are the perfect fashion accessory.  They are an easy and inexpensive way to add some fun and personality to your outfit.  Here are one of my favorite pairs by Jessica Simpson paired with my Vince Camuto booties.  I like the contrast of this look: the tweed skirt…against the patterned tights… against the woven leather bootie!  In a nutshell, don’t be afraid to “mix it up” a bit with the patterns that you choose and what you pair them with.

Here are a few others that I think are fun:

How do you change your fashion as you get closer to the holidays?  Any favorite tights that you’ve found?  Let me know.  Hope everyone had a GREAT Thanksgiving and a terrific start to the week.

OOTD: Sheer Shirts and Riding Boots

Yesterday was an amazingly beautiful day in Charlotte.  It was one of those days that really makes you enjoy the beauty of fall and appreciate all of the little things….  like the gold and orange hues falling from the trees and a baby blue sky.  It was a perfect fall day and quite appropriate for the weekend before Thanksgiving.

I have to admit that I am usually all in a complete rush everywhere that I go and with everything that I do.  I’m not really sure why.  I think it’s just part of me being me.  I live my life by To Do’s and schedules and rules.  Ughhh.  But I’ve gotten so used to that rushed feeling that I tend to take things for granted sometimes.  I am learning, though, as I get older, just to take it all in and enjoy.  And a big part of that is just being grateful for the little things.  Yesterday was one of those days for me.  No rushing.  No angrily flipping someone off someone in traffic (yes, I do that)…  just slow down and enjoy.  Ahhh…  It was quite nice.

I decided to wear a sheer high low blouse that I found at The Rack a few weeks back and my Kelsi Dagger riding boots (Remember the Riding High post?  Well, it was my first time wearing the Kelsi Daggers btw and I simply adore the covered heel).  The high low blouse definitely took me back to the 80’s but hey… it was a chance to channel my inner Joan Collins and Dynasty, right?(minus the shoulder pads – thank you very much).  Anyway, I was inspired by all the vibrant fall colors.  Here in the south, a beautiful fall day always seems to be shrouded in a “halo of gold”.  I know it sounds cliche but it’s true.  I’m not sure if it is because the sun is reflecting off the leaves or what (I don’t even know if that makes sense) but there is this “look” that fall has here.   And I think I was unconsciously channeling that as I put together my look.

What I’m Wearing: Victoria’s Secret Cardigan, Liberty Love Blouse, Gap Ankle Length Skinnies, Kelsi Dagger Riding Boots, Marc by Marc Jacobs Rose Gold Watch, Nordstrom Rack Rose Gold Accessories

Have a great week everyone!!  Thanksgiving is just a few days away!

Latest Obsession: The Printed Pencil Skirt

Yes, that’s right, my latest fashion crush is the pencil skirt.  I know, it sounds incredibly boring, doesn’t it?  But, believe me,  this is not the pencil skirt of old.  This classic style has gotten a well timed makeover — splashes of bold colors and vibrant prints included!

So, you might be wondering if this look is for you….  Absolutely it is!  The pencil skirt is a wardrobe staple simply because this cut is so flattering on practically every body type.  And adding the printed twist gives this look a new perspective and boosts the fun factor!  Bonus points: if you’ve been hesitant to try out printed pants, this is a great way to test out prints on your “bottom half”.

What do you think?  Do you feel inspired?  I certainly do.  I personally love these looks from J. Crew!  I’ve definitely added them to my lust list.  I love how each look has been styled with some of the latest trends: bold colors, mixed prints and contrasting fabrics.

So much personality… great for day but easy to transition to night.  I love it!  My biggest challenge — which one to choose?  I just can’t decide!  I absolutely love the yellow skirt (my next style inspiration – look for a future post) but I adore the pink tweed skirt with the bubble print blouse!  The black piping detail is so sophisticated, yet fun. And how chic is the tuxedo skirt?  Just fabulous.  So many ways to wear this look – it is an absolute must have in your closet right now!

Which of these looks inspire you?  Are you loving the printed pencil skirt right now?  Let me know!

OOTD: Yellow Skinnies

TGIF everyone!!  I’m so glad today is the official start of the weekend — and believe me, it definitely came right on time!   I could not bare another single day of work.  This week was definitely a rough one…  so I am looking forward to some much needed relaxation (translation = shopping therapy).

I actually had an chance to work from home on yesterday….  Believe it or not, I often find it difficult to work from home on a regular basis.  There is usually some meeting or something going on that requires me to be onsite.  But with the crazy week well underway, I thought yesterday would be the perfect day to take a break from the official office scene.

Now, when I first started working from home, for some reason I felt the need to still dress in our business professional attire (not full professional but pretty close- I know silly, right?).  I have no idea why I did this….  I think in my mind it made me feel more like I was in the office and helped me adjust to the work from home routine.  So, as I’ve gotten more comfortable with working from home, I’ve “relaxed” my own dress policy!  Of course, that still doesn’t mean pajamas all day…  so I decided to go with a good compromise….

I chose this look because I really wanted to brighten my mood.  And there is nothing like old favorites to do that…   So enter my yellow skinnies.  Yes,  you’ve seen these before….  They’ve made several guest appearances in prior blogs in fact.  But they always make me feel good.  The color is amazing – they are super soft (just like your favorite worn-in pair) – and the fit is perfect.

What “mood lifting” pieces are in your closet?  Let me know.

What I’m Wearing: Express Moto Jacket, Good Works Tee, J. Crew Yellow Skinnies, Tesori Leopard Print Flats, J. Crew Necklace, Versona Accessories

Here’s to an awesome weekend everyone!!!

OOTD: Fall Color Blocking

Ok, so are you just completely over color blocking at this point?  Ummm….  not so fast.  Color blocking is definitely carrying over  into the fall season.  I personally love when a trend carries over from season to season and honestly even year to year.  It just gives you more time to “perfect” your look!  And of course for fall, there are lots of options available and opportunities to create this trend on your own.  For fall’s version of color blocking, pairing unexpected neutrals with rich, vivid jewel tones can create a great color palette.  What better way to brighten up the cold fall and winter months than with “blocks of color” saturated with jewel tones?

Now, I found this modern shift dress in Nordstrom Rack (of course) on my recent visit up to Philly.  And it was purely the unexpectedness of the color combination that brought it to my attention.  The shift dress is a great way to add color blocking to the fall fashionista’s wardrobe.  Although much of the dress is neutral, the band of red adds some much needed pop.  I love the zipper detail on the back – again an unexpected design element.

Of course, I decided to take my look one step further and accessorize it with color block shoes – just to add a little more “spark” to the ensemble.  I added a simple black long sleeve tee and black ribbed tights to round everything out.

So, what do you think?  Are you over color blocking, yet?  If not, how are you doing this fall?  Let me know!
