Holiday Party Style Collage 2For today’s post, I am super excited to be collaborating with one of my favorite blogger friends, Akinyi from F.I.T.S. on Me, for a special holiday edition style challenge!  Akinyi has such an amazing and unique style perspective!  And with so many fabulous events over the holidays (family get togethers, dinners with friends, parties, etc.), we both thought it would be fun to show our individual takes on dressing for the holiday season!

OOTD: The Color Blocked Sweater

J Crew Factory Color Blocked Sweater You know…  I am completely surprised that color blocking is still going strong.  Not surprised in a bad way…I love color blocking…  but we all know that fashion can be quite fickle at times.  This trend seems to be an exception though.  And I mean in a big way…  it just doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon and in fact, has been getting reinvented each season!  So at what point is it no longer a trend?  Hmmm….

J Crew Factory Color Blocked Sweater I’ll let you ponder that for a moment.  In the meantime, a color blocked sweater, blouse or top is an easy way to work this trend into your wardrobe.  In particular right now as color blocked looks are no longer focusing only on the body of a piece…  many looks now are blocking the cuffs, the collars and even the sleeves!

J Crew Factory Color Blocked Sweater I chose this sweater in fact because it was blocked on the back panel and the cuffs.  Add in the fabulous oxblood color and elbow patches…. and it was pretty much a done deal!

An Afternoon with Designer Kevin Vain

Kevin VainI had the opportunity to spend some time with Charlotte based fashion designer, Kevin Vain, on Saturday afternoon as part of a private fashion seminar and collection showing that he hosted at Imaginon Performing Arts Theater.  It was such a great event…   filled with so many inspirational words from Kevin and amazingly beautiful fashion pieces as well!

Kevin (who’s real name is Kevin Carter) put together the event with the goal of empowering, informing and cultivating others by telling his story of survival from severe bullying but also to serve as an example to others who may feel like their dreams just aren’t possible.  I found Kevin’s words of wisdom to be well beyond his 19 years and his raw talent as a fashion designer undeniable (Kevin is self taught and has never been to design school)!

Kevin Vain - Brocade Dress All of his pieces were stunning, with elaborate detailing and intricate touches!  The above dress is my favorite of the collection!  Made of brocade with crystal detailing…  it is quite a statement piece!  In fact, it was placed on display at the Mint Museum for over a year.

Kevin VainI definitely loved his looks and his collection…. but I also really loved his story.  I found him to be such an authentic person… very kind and humble and truly wanting to help others.  To me…  that’s rare and inspiring.

Kevin’s speciality is Haute Couture and Ready to Wear pieces.  He has had the honor of being featured in over a dozen publications and has even made a custom gown for Michelle Obama!  After seeing his work up close and meeting him in person, I can see why.

End Of Summer Find: Pink Floral Pencil Skirt

Ann Taylor Pink Floral Pencil SkirtOk, so you know that I am an absolute sucker for a great find and a fabulous sale! Ann Taylor had a super awesome semi-annual sale last week and I can only describe my participation in it as…   well me simply losing my plum mind ( plum – that is what people say right?)!!

Anyway, maybe I was just missing out on this sale in years past but I just don’t think that I have ever seen deals this good at Ann Taylor.   Severe discounts AND an additional 60% off the lowest price! What? Yeah, you don’t have to tell me twice!!!

Ann Taylor Floral Pencil SkirtI ended up grabbing up 2 pencil skirts, 3 dresses, 2 pair of super cute printed cropped pants, and 2 printed tops – all for less than $150! That’s about $15 for each piece!!! For items that were on average $100 each!!!  Woo-hoo!!!  You just couldn’t ask for any better!

Zara Pink BlazerOf course I’m all over florals at the moment, so I just couldn’t pass up a chance to increase my floral skirt collection!!!! Regular price $88 – I paid $15.  Yes!

Ann Taylor Pink Floral Pencil SkirtYou’ll be seeing more of my finds in future posts….  and you know what?  — this may just be my favorite time of year, next to Christmas of course!  The end of summer deals have been crazy!!!!  (Yes, I’m guilty….  major hauls at Zara, J. Crew AND Ann Taylor just to name a few).

The Summer Sweater

Mint Polka Dot J. Crew Sweater I have to be completely honest with you…  I never quite understood people who would wear long sleeves in the summer.  I’d see these people and immediately shake my head.  What could they be thinking?  It’s hot outside for goodness sake!!  I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I have never wore long sleeves in summer, of course I have … prior to my job  going business casual I didn’t really have a choice … but to make an actual fashion decision to wear long sleeves in the summer?  Well, that would be ridiculous, right?   Right…?

Mint Polka Dot J. Crew Sweater Yeah, I’m not so sure anymore.  My fashion rules have definitely evolved over time…  in particular since starting the blog.  I am completely ok with long sleeves and shorts now (which was absolutely laughable to me just a few years back), blazers with shorts and yes, even the summertime sweater.  I would have never worn any of these things 3 years ago…  it would have seemed so silly to me.  But I love this look now!

Mint Polka Dot J. Crew Sweater I picked this sweater up from J. Crew initially simply for the fabulous print (polka dots!!) and the beautiful color combo (mint and blue) but once I tried it on, I loved it even more so because it is so lightweight.  Absolutely perfect for a summer day out.  I wore this look to an afternoon movie matinee the other day…  it was just fine in the humidity of the day (and it kept me comfortable in the chilly theater).

Styling White Shorts

How to Style White ShortsIf you know me, you know that my style choices tend to run in themes.  And right now…  I am all about florals, all about peplums and apparently… all about white!  Not sure how the white thing happened but I am definitely loving it at the moment.

How to Style White ShortsNow, I actually purchased these white shorts from Ann Taylor last summer.  That’s right – last summer – and they have literally been sitting in my closet – tags attached – for the last year or so.  But after styling my white denim post a few weeks back, I decided to “pop the tags” on these bad boys!

Printed Blazer The trick with these is that they are short and *ahem* rather fitted let’s just say.  So… I really wanted to contrast the top half of the look with something longer and looser fitting.  (While short shorts are definitely “in” right now…  Short tight shorts with short tight tops aren’t very flattering!).  Adding the printed blazer, white tee and the leather clutch balanced it out more and made it a more classic yet still fun look.

The Summer Classic: White Denim

Zara Ceramic BlazerOkay, so I’ve never really been a big white denim person.  At all.  But the thing is…  I’m not really sure why.  I mean there’s no question that white jeans are a classic closet staple for most.  And honestly nothing really says summer chic more than a great pair of crisp white jeans.  But somehow, no matter how much I loved them on other people, every single pair that I would buy would either end up just hanging there in my closet with the tags still attached or donated to charity!  To the point that I just stopped buying them all together.

Zara Ceramic Print BlazerSo fast forward to now and me picking up this fabulous Zara blazer.  My first inclination was to, of course, pair it with my blue denim boyfriends but with summer being in full swing, I thought… hmmm…  why not try the white jean thing again?

I guess the real selling point for this look for me was styling it with the simple white tank.  I admit I tinkered around with a navy tee for a hot second but I quickly nixed that!  Making white the primary color really added that pop to it that I wanted.  And the vintage clutch polished it off ( btw I am SO in love with clutches right now!).
